Diarmuid dan Ailell is the King’s Heir, the next in line to the throne of Brennin. He was under his father’s reign, after his older brother Ailenor dan Ailell had been exiled, and is again when his brother returns to claim the throne upon their father’s death. He is has rakish tendencies of the first degree—going so far as to sneak into a neighboring country simply to seduce the beautiful princess Sharra of Cathal, and there is evidence that he slept with most of the ladies of the court. He tends to place claims to young women, as well—as he did with Jennifer when she first arrived in Fionavar, calling her a “peach” and flirting with her shamelessly. He is also very often sarcastic, and more often drunk. However, despite his manner and frequent drinking (his favorite place is the Black Boar, the tavern in the capital city of Paras Derval), Diarmuid is really quite bright, and thinks well on his feet, even through the alcohol he consumes. When strangers from another world came to Fionavar, he was quick to protect them from the Chancellor. Also, despite an apparent joy in freedom from having to run the kingdom, (he says once “It has only just occurred to me that as High King I couldn’t very easily drop in to the Boar at night”) Diarmuid nonetheless has deeply set convictions about what is right and wrong, and is willing to sacrifice for those convictions. He rarely lets much show through the mask of command, glitter, and ironically-edged charm he has, but he really does feel things deeply, mourning the apparent loss of Paul Schafer after knowing him only a week, and being rather hurt when both his brother and the princess he seduced proved willing to kill him.

He is fairly tall, and well muscled from being trained in swordwork and fighting. He has blond hair and remarkably blue eyes.
